Anxiety
Anxiety

Anxiety can be manifested as hyper-aroused or heightened emotional state in a person, and related cognitive symptoms such as rumination, impaired attentional span and distorted thinking styles. Anxiety usually creates a 'fight or flight' state in a person, resulting in active scanning for danger and avoidance of feared situations. Psychological and psychotherapeutic treatments for anxiety aim to lessen the somatic symptoms and related negative thinking styles in a person. Although treatment lengths vary from one person to another, medium-term treatments are usually recommended for a person to no longer experience anxiety symptoms.

Depression
Depression

Depression refers to when a person has experienced low mood for a prolonged period, usually leading the person to withdraw socially and use other maladaptive coping behaviours. People with depression overall experience a lack of pleasure and motivations when engaging in activities that they used to enjoy mainly due to sense of hopelessness and helplessness they feel on a regular basis. Feeling "down" and "blue" often or repeatedly making negative remarks about life could indicate the onset of depression for some people, whereas for others, feeling more tired and sleepy than usual could indicate the onset. Depending on the person's presentation and description of depression symptoms during initial sessions, recommendations of either medium or long term treatments will be made.

Trauma

Trauma covers a wide range of symptoms and situations people experience. Although post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is the most well-known clinical presentation of severe trauma, multiple sessions are required in the initial phase to determine the most suitable treatments for individuals presenting with trauma symptoms. Longer-term therapy is often required for trauma work as it is often the case for clients to present with multiple areas of life or themselves they would like to work on.  Eclectic approach, also known as 'mixed approach' is typically used to treat a person with trauma experience, incorporating cognitive behavioural approach with psychodynamic approach that focuses on improving overall quality of life. It is common for people to present with high level of anxiety, specifically about trauma incidents, and have triggers that induce strong emotional reaction such as guilt, shame and fear.

Personality disorders
Personality disorders

Personality disorders often significantly impact a person's quality of life by hindering the interpersonal, occupational and social functioning. Despite the term 'personality disorder' carrying immense stigma in today's society, early interventions and committed treatments could enhance a person's overall quality of life by ameliorating associated symptoms, as well as improving self-awareness and cognitive insights into some enduring maladaptive behavioural patterns. Different personality disorders are associated with different cognitive, affective and behavioural tendencies, and it is common for people with personality disorders to have maladaptive sets of cognitive styles and behavioural patterns, resulting in their experience of overall decreased quality of life. Long-term psychodynamic therapy, as well as eclectic approach entailing therapies that are based on cognitive behavioural approach are mostly recommended for individuals with personality disorders. Skills-based therapies such as dialectical behavioural therapies are also utilised to teach individuals some practical skills around emotional regulation and sound interpersonal relationships.

Adolescent Therapy
Adolescent therapy

Adolescent therapy usually entails individuals between the ages 12- 18 seeking psychotherapeutic treatments often accompanied by their parents or primary care givers. Parental consent and involvement are usually preferred, however this is discussed at the outset of therapy to address the best interest of adolescent clients. As adolescence marks the developmental stage where significant life transition occurs, a trust-based and committed engagement in therapy sessions are required to bring about effective change in a young person.

Grief and Loss
Grief and loss

Grievance over loss or sufferings of any kind is a universal human experience. Whether it is related to past or recent events, or the intangibles like identity, reputation, rights or dignity, psychotherapeutic sessions provide deeper insights into a person's grief. Like all other areas of practice, grief and loss work require clients' committed engagement in therapy to bring about change and foster hope in their current experience.

*All session resources will be provided in sessions under the discretion of a therapist. It is hoped that clients practice skills outside of sessions and complete in-between session tasks by referring to the resources.
